India does not spring forward. `Asia/Kolkata` is UTC+5:30 in January and in July. The United States does move, so the civil conversion changes on 8 March and 1 November 2026 even though Bangalore does nothing. Half hours already break naive calendars. DST on one side makes them worse.
Bangalore and Hyderabad are the remote-work magnets. New York, Austin, and San Francisco are the usual other ends. There is no slot that is late morning for both. Anyone who claims otherwise is describing a night shift and hoping you will not name it.
The arithmetic without folklore
New York winter (EST, UTC−5): IST is 10.5 hours ahead. 08:00 ET is 18:30 IST. 09:00 ET is 19:30 IST. India’s polite office day (09:00–18:00 IST) maps to 22:30–07:30 ET — which is New York’s night and next morning. Live overlap without stretching India late is essentially none. The stretch that teams actually use is India staying until 19:00–20:00 / New York starting at 08:00–09:00.
New York summer (EDT, UTC−4): IST is 9.5 hours ahead. 08:00 EDT is 17:30 IST. Slightly kinder to India. Still not a 10:00 ET meeting (19:30 IST).
California winter (PST, UTC−8): 08:00 PT is 21:30 IST. That is a night. 18:00 PT is 07:30 IST next calendar day — India’s morning, California’s evening. Same pattern as Japan, worse by the half hour.
Austin sits on Central Time. It is kinder than California and slightly worse than New York. Still a stretch.
Night shift is a contract
Some Bangalore teams are staffed to overlap US hours. Those humans start afternoon IST and run into the night. That is a job design with pay, transport, and consent attached. It is not “how India works.” If your counterpart did not tell you they are on that shift, 21:00 IST is rude.
Do not @ a city-wide channel at 22:00 IST because one vendor team was awake last Thursday.
A humane operating system
- Default to written decisions. Use the overlap only to unblock. - If you must meet weekly, rotate: one week India stays to 19:30 IST, one week US joins at 07:30 ET. Publish the rotation. - Never make the same three Indian engineers the permanent late shift because they “seem flexible.” - Schedule send from the US evening to 09:30 IST. - Name `Asia/Kolkata` in the invite, not “IST-ish” and not “Mumbai time” as if it differed.
Diwali week, national holidays, and regional festivals will empty Bangalore while Austin works. US Thanksgiving will empty Austin while Hyderabad works. Ping the next shared workday.
Half hours and DST weekends
Adelaide is not the only 30-minute trap, but India is the one US teams hit daily. Calendar UIs hide `:30` in some mobile layouts. Confirm 18:30 IST is not 18:00. On 8 March 2026, rebuild the series when the US jumps. India will not meet you halfway.
If you also have London in the call, you are running a three-continent meeting. Split it. The New York–London overlap is not a place to drag IST by accident.
Check Bangalore or Hyderabad before you ping. The least-bad window is India’s evening and America’s morning — and even that is a favor.
Pay, transport, and the 20:00 IST standup
If the job requires 18:30–21:30 IST overlap with New York mornings, say so in the hiring post and pay for it. Bangalore traffic at 21:00 is a safety issue, not a productivity footnote. Companies that "just hop on" at 20:30 IST without cabs or extra pay are extracting a night shift.
Parents, women commuting, and anyone not on a corporate shuttle should be able to decline 21:00 IST without a career penalty. If they cannot, you do not have a meeting-window problem. You have a labor problem.
Write the overlap as a shrinking resource: two nights a week, rotating, recorded. The rest is documents. Austin 08:00 is still evening in Hyderabad; it is not automatically kinder than New York.
Check Bangalore before you ping at what is breakfast for you and dinner-plus-commute for them.
Field notes from the city desk
Bangalore (Asia/Kolkata) does not owe you HQ hours. US-overlap nights exist by contract. If your teammate is not on that shift, 22:00 IST is rude. Ping inside 09:00–18:00 around Koramangala / Whitefield / Outer Ring, or schedule send. Presence dots after 18:00 are scenery.
In Hyderabad, start from HITEC City / Gachibowli. Same IST, same US-night caveat as Bangalore. Confirm the shift before you assume 24/7. The local prior remains 09:00–18:00 (Asia/Kolkata). If this article's advice conflicts with that desk, the desk wins — ask once and write it down.
In New York, start from FiDi. Slack after 19:00 is usually parked until the morning subway ride. The local prior remains 09:00–18:00 (America/New_York). If this article's advice conflicts with that desk, the desk wins — ask once and write it down.
Austin (America/Chicago) does not owe you HQ hours. The city sells laid-back; the calendars are still packed from 09:00 to 18:00 and SXSW weeks are a write-off. Ping inside 09:00–18:00 around Downtown Austin, or schedule send. Presence dots after 18:00 are scenery.
Treat San Francisco as a place, not a resource pool. SoMa keeps 09:00–18:00 as the honest window. Async is a religion until someone in London needs a decision; then the 08:00 Pacific standup appears. A calendar title that omits America/Los_Angeles is how this city gets pinged in the dark.
None of these notes replace the live verdict. Open the city page at send time. Clocks and holidays move; this paragraph does not.
